About Me
My Beginnings
Have had a passion for plaster casting as of about 10 years now, originally became interested in the art form while working alongside a former friend and his girlfriend on a similar project. Was also deeply involved in a non profit called 1000 Mermaids, which is an Artificial Reef project that was initially based around plaster mold casting as well, but eventually became 3D Scanning and concrete based. Took a couple years off due to Covid, but now fully back up and running, creating casts whenever and wherever possible in my free time! My Favorite Work
Have always enjoyed getting my hands dirty in some form or another. If not literally in the soil of a garden which is a little harder to find in an urban setting, then why not in a bucket of plaster to create plaster mold casting art for all to enjoy! What a wonderful thing to be able to perfectly capture the essence of a real life model and recreate it into a piece of art for your wall or table. Or even to enjoy the process in person at a live art event, previous locations include Art Basel (Fontainebleau), Artserve, Miami City Ballet, The Wharf, The Hub, The W, and many more. And of course where better of a place to do all this than in sunny South Florida!
My Life Today
I'm very lucky to be plaster casting in my free time. Juggling a few different pursuits post covid slowed down the bodycasting, but recent changes have allowed refocus on this passion, as well as potential upcoming travel to meet interesting new people all around the country while I pursue this dream. And having had the pleasure of working with so many unique people already like Chris O'Hare of Pineapple Grove Designs, concrete builder of the artificial reef project 1000 Mermaids and Evan Snow the now owner and operator of 1000 Mermaids and art community building project Zero Empty Spaces. Bodycasting is the process of making a direct mold of a person’s body using skin safe materials, then creating a solid sculpture from that mold. It’s a literal one to one imprint of the body, not sculpted or idealized.
Yes. Traditional sculpture is interpretive and built by hand. Bodycasting is about capturing, not inventing. The form comes from the body itself, not an artist’s imagination.
Mostly torsos and lower bodies. They’re structurally practical, easier to cast cleanly and they keep the focus on form. But anything can be cast!
It doesn’t hurt. There can be mild pressure and heat or cool sensations while the material sets, but it’s brief and safe when done properly.
The actual molding takes only 25-30 minutes depending on the amount of coverage. The full process including prep, drying and cleanup is longer, but the model isn’t stuck staying still for much longer than 30 minutes.
Some people see it as art, some as documentation and some as a personal keepsake. For many, it’s about preserving their body as it is at a specific moment in time during their life.
No. It’s a casting technique used in art, medical reference, and effects work. The context determines how it’s read.
Yes. Professional bodycasting uses skin safe molding materials designed specifically for contact with the body. Safety and comfort come first. If a model panics during or starts to feel like they are getting dizzy or may faint the bodycast comes to an end at that point.
The mold is used to create a final sculpture, which can be finished in different ways depending on the project. The end result is a physical object that can be displayed or collected.
A better understanding of the body as something real and dimensional, not just an image. And maybe a little appreciation for how unique and interesting the human form actually is.
